KnowMe 2027: How to Sew a Stunning Ankara Romper – My Experience

KnowMe 2027 is a fake me out. Watch out! I’ve been sewing through these KnowMe patterns by Mimi G and came across KnowMe2027, designed by Keechi B style and printed by the Simplicity Creativity Group.

Why I choose KnowMe 2027

It took me two months to finish it, but that’s a story for later in this review.

Let’s talk about why I chose this beauty. I love rompers and dresses, so this sewing pattern felt like a good marriage between the two. Remember my favorite Vogue jumper, Vogue 9075? It gives the feminine vibes of a dress while keeping the sporty feel of a romper, but it has many other features.

Features of KnowMe 2027

There are two basic views, a pants view and a shorts view.  But if that were the end of this sewing journey, I wouldn’t be writing this review on my blog.  KnowMe 2027 also features a dual closure in the front – buttons on the front of the bodice and a fly zipper. It also has a custom belt because she’s fancy like that. The design of the pants or shorts is exceptionally flattering to all body types.  The pants on KnowMe 2027, while cut on the straight grain, are constructed in four pieces, giving the shorts more body and drape than regular pants.  Yes, it’s going to cover and complement those thighs.  You can thank her later. And as if that were not enough, there is a two-part collar, pockets, and a contrasting connecting accent detail.

The Snags (and My Ankara Fabric Choice)

It’s not that I sew slowly.  I’m pretty fast, but this pattern has a lot going on.   Unlike my Vogue 9075 jumper that only has a simple back zipper, KnowMe 2027 wore me out.  It’s not the design.  It was me with Dutch wax Ankara directly from Ghana.  It features a large flower motif on a plum base with accents of mustard yellow with a linear border print. Yep, I’m doing the most with this design, and I probably should have chosen a solid fabric to work with, but that wouldn’t be true to who I am, so here we are (LOL!).

Butt mistakes were made (LOL!)

It took me days to cut the ME2027 pattern. I attempted to put the right motifs and sprinkles of colors and designs in the right place. My only failure was that I have a tail. Yup. When I cut the back of the shorts, I falsely assumed I cut around a fabric feature—I did not. It is on the center of my buttocks. FAIL-ish. But I’m still going to wear it.

I also cut the collar twice trying to make sure I didn’t distract from the romper by making the collar and yoke fabrics too busy.  Overall, I give myself a “B” on successfully doing this for KnowMe 2027.  And at one point, I crumpled this entire make and put it in the “no-no pile”.  Then, while I was constructing another garment, I decided to try it on.  My words of affirmation to myself kept me going on this one, and I’m glad it did.

This make is authentically me, 100%. The Ankara, the play on the placement of the flower, and the other fabric elements are expressive, bold, and eye-catching. Nothing is boring about it. And while I never want onlookers to assume that I made a garment (meaning it looks unprofessionally made), this screams custom and boutique.

Final Thoughts

I love KnowMe 2027 an I would sew it again in a solid or print sans the butt mistake I made. It’s super cute and comfortable.  Many diverse body types could grace this pattern and look and feel incredibly beautiful.
