Pleats, Please! Adventures in Pre-Pleated Fabric with Simplicity 8556 How to use Simple Patterns for Complicated Fabrics

Hello, fellow fabric fanatics! I recently embarked on a sewing adventure that pushed me outside my comfort zone and into the world of pre-pleated fabric. Intrigued by the crisp lines and effortless chic of pleated pants, I decided to tackle Simplicity 8556, specifically View B. My vision? The sophisticated look of Simplicity 8177, but without the fuss of a fly front.

My fabric choice? A vibrant yellow pre-pleated wonder that practically screamed “sunshine” from the shelves of Promenade Fabrics in New Orleans. (Seriously, if you’re ever in the Big Easy, this shop is a must-visit!) I wrote an entire blog post complete with ridiculous photos.

Pleat dilemma and fix for Simplicity 8556

I’ll be honest: this was my first foray into pre-pleated territory, and it presented a unique set of challenges. And I love pleats. Remember the Vogue 1513 and Vogue 1874? The difference is I created the pleats. With this fabric, I am at the mercy of the fabric. Keeping those pleats aligned while cutting and sewing felt like a delicate dance, but a little strategic Scotch tape kept everything in place. Trying not to overstretch the pleats while cutting was a hurdle. Maintaining the integrity of the design and look of this yellow silk was essential to me and, ultimately, the flow of the pants.

Despite the challenges and frustration, I’m thrilled with the final result! These pants are incredibly comfortable and have a beautiful drape. The wide-leg silhouette is flattering and perfect for casual outings and dressier occasions. I opted for a 3/4″ elastic waistband instead of the recommended 1″ for a more snug (but still comfy!) fit.

Styling Simplicity 8556

Like always, I try to make the most of every piece, optimizing the number and type of styles I can wear for ultimate sustainability. For a casual summer look, I’ve chosen a simple, inexpensive top by Old Navy and paired it with a pair of chunky block-heel sandals, but this could have easily been paired with a classic white T-shirt and sandals or, even classier, a light blazer and heels.

Lessons Learned and Future Hacks:

This pattern is a great starting point, but I’ve already got some ideas brewing for my next pair. First up, pockets! Because who doesn’t love a good pocket? I’m also planning to add a lining for a more luxurious feel and to prevent any potential see-through issues with lighter-weight fabrics.

Hemming Hack for Simplicity 8556 Pleated Pants:

Hemming pleated pants can be a bit tricky, but here’s a tip I learned along the way:

  1. Try them on with the shoes you plan to wear. This will help you determine the correct length.
  2. Pin the hem carefully, making sure the pleats fall naturally.
  3. Hand-baste the hem in place to keep those pleats aligned while you sew.
  4. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine to prevent the fabric from shifting.
  5. Press carefully to avoid flattening the pleats.

Sewing For My Sanity Tip:

Don’t be afraid to experiment with pre-pleated fabrics! They can add a unique touch to your wardrobe and open up a whole new world of sewing possibilities. Remember to be patient, embrace the challenge, and have fun!

Happy sewing, adventurers!
