Chanel jacket meets LBD in tweed
The Tweed Sheath
Honestly, when fabric goes on sale and its something you really want it’s almost impossible to say “no.” When Hancock Fabrics went out of business, I was shocked, but we all knew there was only one slot for a Joann type fabric store and Hancock’s couldn’t compete with the mega fabric and craft giant. Personally, I wasn’t a big Hancock Fabrics fan, BUT occasionally you could find a killer home dec fabric or some cool winter fabrics.
When they went out of business, I bought tons of winter fabrics for fun. This fabric was one of those finds. I love working with heavy woven fabrics. It’s a different kind of challenge than knits. They don’t stretch and making mistakes cutting, or sewing can cost you in fit and comfort.
This dress was supposed to be a muslin, but I ended up wearing it one day, and that was all she wrote.
Pattern Review
I like this pattern. I had to make the usually hip and bust adjustments, and I shortened it a bit to fit my petite frame.
Pattern Description: Classic cut shift dress in sleeveless or 3/4 sleeve.
Pattern Sizing: Size: A (10-12-14-16-18-20-22)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, very clear
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? At first, I hated the pockets; they seemed oddly placed, but after I put the dress together I thought it was cute. I also like the instructions for completing the fringed look. It worked perfectly with the tweed fabric.
Fabric Used: Tweed from Hancock Fabrics from my stash
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Serious bust adjustments and my standard adjustments to the length and back to waist (I’m 4’11”); 10 on top, graded to 12-14 waist and hips
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Conclusion: An excellent wardrobe addition. You can make this dress formal or casual; boots or heels; tights or bare leg; it’s wonderfully diverse
