How to Style Desigual: Taming the Statement Blazer

How I Style Misunderstood Brands Like Desigual

Welcome back to the SFMS Private Archive, the permanent home for curated style and advanced garment engineering! đź‘‘

They say “less is more,” but after a decade in the fashion world, I’m here to tell you that sometimes, more is more. We often shy away from “loud” clothing as we mature. We’re told to stick to neutrals. But I’ve always admired that unapologetic, artistic energy of brands that refuse to blend in.

Today, we need to have a serious C-Suite meeting about a brand that splits the internet: Desigual. This Spain-born brand is the epitome of joy, energy, and unadulterated color. Think of Desigual as the passionate, sun-drenched version of the British brand Boden. It has the unfair reputation of being “kooky,” but let’s set the record straight: Those people are just styling it incorrectly.

The Maker’s Eye: Why This Jacket Works

You know I usually preach the gospel of “Make It Yourself.” But part of Sewing For My Sanity is knowing when to sit behind the machine and when to simply enjoy the fashion. Even though I didn’t sew this one myself, I examined it with my “sewing eye.”

Usually, when you buy bold prints off the rack, the manufacturer skimps on the structure. You get a cool print on flimsy fabric. What makes this jacket earn a spot in my closet is the tailoring. It has the crispness of a heavy cotton canvas, holding its shape perfectly at the shoulders and collar.

For My Sewing Crew (DIY The Vibe): If you want to replicate this structure, look for “Newsprint” or “Graffiti” print heavy twill from Mood Fabrics or Minerva. Use the Closet Core Jasika Blazer pattern for real curves. The secret? Do not skip the high-quality weft insertion interfacing. That stiffness is the difference between “High Fashion” and “Costume.”

The Golden Rule of styling a piece like this: The Desigual garment is the only showstopper. It must be surrounded entirely by structural staples. By building a completely monochromatic black column underneath the blazer (a tailored top and structured shorts), I created a deep, empty void for the eyes to rest.

To bridge the gap between the bare leg and the cool air, I opted for a sheer, geometric patterned tight and anchored it with high-gloss platform loafers. The final touch? An unapologetic pop of contrast with vibrant teal sunglasses.

A Crucial Styling Note: If you choose shorts, make sure the jacket doesn’t make you appear bottomless. This can seem tasteless. Proper proportions and textured hosiery are your best friends here.

Look 2: High-Low Luxury (Date Night)

This is where the joy happens. I took the exact same jacket and transformed it for a date night with the hubby. We had to attend a work party with the dress code “casual”. What does that mean? And why, sir, does the invite say casual? I will not walk in in blue jeans, no, ma’am.

This is the definition of High-Low Styling: mixing a fun, accessible garment with luxury investment pieces. I swapped the fun glasses for a classic red lip and a chunky gold chain. I grounded the look with sleek black leggings tucked into tall, structured black leather boots, and finished it with an inspired quilted heart bag. The jacket stops looking “funky” and starts looking expensive.

Command the Garment

The final part of this equation is purely executive presence. When you are wearing a piece as loud as Desigual, you must carry it with complete confidence. You can’t just put on a showstopper; you have to command it.
