The Ultimate Guide to Fabric Shopping in Miami (An Honest Review)

Hey everyone!

After more than ten years of writing this blog, I’ve learned that there are two types of vacations: regular vacations, and sewing vacations. You know what I’m talking about—the kind where you strategically pack a half-empty suitcase, knowing it will come home stuffed with fabric treasures. And friends, there are few better cities for a sewing vacation than Miami. Now as you all know, I almost always double dip a trip, so it’s a business-sewing-work-vacation, remember Ghana, New Orleans, and Minnesota! All fabulous business-side-trip-adventures.

On my latest trip for my “Next Chapter” series, I finally had the chance to do a deep dive. But let me tell you, it was an adventure! The city is a paradise for sewists, but you need a plan. This, my friends, is that plan.

Miami Beach, Florida, USA on Ocean Drive.

The Most Important Tip: Let’s Talk Transportation

Before we even talk about fabric, we need to talk about logistics. As you can see from this map, Miami is a sprawling city, and the main fabric stores are nowhere near each other. Anyone attempting a day of fabric shopping here should have a car or be ready to Uber.

I was traveling from Aventura for this trip, and my estimated Uber cost for the day was just under $70. You have to weigh this against the cost of a rental car plus the notoriously expensive hotel parking in Miami. For me, Uber felt like the right choice, but it came with a challenge I didn’t anticipate: carrying heavy fabric was extremely challenging. Just like my Atlanta Fabric Hunt post, I strongly advise a car. This one is certainly not a public transportation worthy haul–it’s almost impossible.

My #1 Sanity Saver Tip: If you plan to do serious shopping, using a personal vehicle is your best bet. If you Uber, bring a large, durable tote bag or even a small rolling suitcase to manage your haul.

The Main Event: My Miami Fabric Tour

With my transport sorted, I had time to explore three of Miami’s most talked-about stores. Here is my honest, unsponsored review of each.

Rex Fabrics: The Luxury Experience

  • Vibe: Pure, old-school glamour and sophistication.
  • Best For: Special occasion fabrics, couture materials, and serious inspiration.

Let me be clear: Rex Fabrics is absolutely top-notch. I’ve been to many fabric stores around the world, and this one is special. You walk into a two-story, carpeted space with mirrored walls, where bolts of fabric are displayed like works of art. The experience itself is pure luxury; you can relax in brightly upholstered chairs while they cut your fabric on a sleek glass counter. The staff are incredibly helpful—the woman who cut some gold satin for me also took the time to help select the perfect matching zipper and lining. Superb service.

Now, let’s talk price. This place is extremely expensive. A standard zipper is $5. Some fabrics start at a few hundred dollars per yard. However, buyer beware: I did see some fabrics here that I’ve seen in other haberdasheries for much less. The benefit is the curation; if you have a special project and a healthy budget, you will find a world-class selection.

Mood Fabrics: The High-Fashion Hub

  • Vibe: Trendy, bustling, and full of creative possibilities.
  • Best For: High-quality apparel fabrics, natural fibers, and great notions.

As a fan of Project Runway, visiting Mood always feels like coming home. The Miami location is two stories of pure fun, neatly organized by fabric type. One of the things I love about their shopping experience is that they let you wander the two floors (accessible by stairs or an elevator) without being disturbed. A huge time-saver is that they will cut your fabric while you continue to shop, so you don’t have to haul heavy bolts to the cutting table. Just remember to gather everything and pay on the bottom level before you leave. And a quick, real-talk tip: yes, there are restrooms for when you’re there for hours (like me!), but maybe check the lock on the door first! (Just trust me on that one 😉).

The selection of lace, silks, wools, and appliqués is fantastic, and the notion wall is a great deal—I bought 10 high-quality zippers for just $7.50!

Rosas Fabrics: The Local Stop

  • Vibe: A small, traditional, no-frills fabric store.
  • Best For: Basic fabrics and notions if you happen to be in the area.

I have to be honest with you all. For me, this was a waste of an Uber on this particular trip. It’s a very small shop, and the fabrics were not of the high quality I was hoping for. It’s also quite a bit off the beaten path. I wouldn’t make a special trip for it.

Other Miami Stores on My Radar

I didn’t have time to visit every store on this trip, but here are a few others from prior trips and research that are worth knowing about:

  • Linda’s Fabrics: Known for having a huge selection of quilting cottons and fun prints. A great spot for quilters.
  • Miami Fabrics: A local favorite, often praised for its wide variety of apparel fabrics, including lots of knits.
  • Fabric World: A large, warehouse-style store that’s great for basics and bulk buys.
  • La Casa de las Telas: This isn’t one store, but a type of workhorse shop you’ll find in the Downtown Fabric District. They are packed floor-to-ceiling with bolts, and it’s where the real treasure hunt begins.
  • Botones y Más: Tucked between the giant fabric stores are smaller shops dedicated entirely to notions. Zippers, thousands of buttons, unique trims—these shops are essential.

Final Thoughts & Tips

Fabric shopping in Miami is an incredible adventure. My final advice is to plan your day around one or two key stores that fit your budget and project needs.

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: I cannot stress this enough.
  • Bring Cash: Some of the smaller, family-run shops are cash-only or will give you a better deal for it.
  • Inspect Your Cut: Before the scissors come out, inspect your fabric length for any flaws.

Miami is a city that pulsates with energy, and its fabric scene is no different. So next time you’re in South Florida, carve out a few hours, bring that empty suitcase, and get ready for a fabric haul you won’t soon forget.
