Styling the Faux Fur Crop & Leather Shorts: The Amsterdam Edit
There is a specific kind of electric energy that pulses through European cities at night. It isn’t just the lights reflecting off the canals; it’s the unapologetic style of the women walking the cobblestones.
During a recent trip to Belgium and Amsterdam, I found myself mesmerized not just by the architecture, but by the street style. It was thirty-six degrees outside—a temperature that usually dictates oversized parkas and sensible layers. Yet, everywhere I looked, I saw women (and men) serving absolute luxury. They were wearing furs. They were wearing boots. And, most surprisingly, they were wearing shorts.
It was a full-on visual fashion masterclass in texture and thermoregulation. It was fabulous. And it sparked a realization: we often let the calendar dictate our wardrobe when we should let the occasion dictate it.
The Look: Texture over Temperature
For this look, I wanted to channel that fearless European energy. And before we move on, let me say that this look was in no way limited to so-called “young” women. This was a full-on universal vibe—a bonus lesson in ageless confidence and expression.
Let’s start with the star of the show: the fur. The centerpiece is, of course, the Faux Fur Cropped Coat from Express.

Faux fur has come a long way. This piece features a modern cropped length (26 inches) that hits exactly at the high hip, which is crucial for proportion when you are playing with volume. The large lapels frame the face, adding that “old money” aesthetic without the ethical baggage. It’s lined, warm, and creates an inverted triangle silhouette that is incredibly flattering.
The Irony of the Shorts
Here is the fashion irony I love: The shorts actually cost more (or at least just as much) as the fur.
These are the Colette Studded Faux Leather Shorts by Mauve, picked up from Anthropologie. Constructed from 100% polyurethane with a viscose/elastane lining, they feel substantial. The grommet pocket detailing adds a necessary “rock and roll” edge to soften the sweetness of the fur.

Wearing leather (or high-quality faux leather) in winter is a power move. It reads as armor. It’s sleek, it reflects the city lights, and when paired with opaque tights, it elongates the leg line in a way that trousers simply can’t.
The Secret to Winter Warmth
You might be asking the same question I asked in Amsterdam: How are you not freezing?
I figured it out. The secret isn’t just “toughing it out.” It’s strategic layering. The European secret involves high-denier tights—often fleece-lined variants that mimic the look of sheer hose—and proper footwear.
(Stay tuned: The following blog post, coming next week, is my deep-dive tutorial on exactly how to layer for warmth while wearing shorts.)
But the short version? When your core is wrapped in a heavy, lined faux fur, and your legs are insulated by tall leather boots and quality hosiery, the exposed skin gap is minimal. It allows you to maintain a high-fashion aesthetic without shivering through dinner.
For the Makers: The Private Archive Edit
As always, my brain deconstructs every garment I buy. While I purchased these pieces, this look is entirely replicable for my sewing community.
- The Vest Option: If a full coat feels like too much volume, consider a faux fur vest. I previously reviewed Butterick 5359 (which includes a great vest version)—check out that archive post for tips on handling the fabric.
- The Coat: To recreate this cropped silhouette, look for patterns with a shawl collar and shorten the hem (McCall’s M7847 or Burda 6359 are excellent starting points). You want a pattern that handles bulk well.
- The Shorts: The key here is the hardware. Don’t just sew the shorts; invest in a grommet press. The hardware is what takes a garment from “homemade” to “high-end RTW.”
