My Favorite Sewing Marking Tool is FREE (And in Your Shower!)
We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of a project, and your chalk wheel runs out of chalk, your favorite marker has dried up, or worse, you make a mark that refuses to wash out of your precious fabric. The search for the perfect sewing marking tool can feel endless.

But what if I told you that my absolute favorite, most reliable marking tool is probably sitting in your shower right now?
For years, my go-to secret weapon has been a simple, humble sliver of old bar soap. It’s an old-school hack that is sustainable, shockingly effective, and has saved my sanity on countless projects. Before you dismiss it, let me break down why this simple trick is a game-changer.
Why the “Soap Sliver Hack” is a Game-Changer
This isn’t just about being frugal; this method has real, practical benefits that outperform many commercial tools.
1. It’s Gentle & Washes Out Completely
The number one rule of marking fabric is “do no harm.” Soap is, by its nature, designed to be gentle and water-soluble. It rests on the surface of the fibers and doesn’t sink in like an ink-based marker might. When you’re ready, a little spritz of water or the first wash, and the mark vanishes completely without a trace or any staining.
2. The Lines are Crisp & Surprisingly Clear
The key is to let your soap slivers dry out completely until they are hard. The thin, sharp edge of a used bar of soap creates a fine, bright white line that is incredibly easy to see on medium to dark-colored fabrics. It’s often brighter and more precise than a waxy tailor’s chalk.
3. It’s the Ultimate Travel-Friendly Notion
This is one of my favorite perks. I love to take hand-sewing projects with me when I travel, but I’m always worried about marking tools leaking, bleeding, or breaking in my project bag. A soap sliver is a solid. It can’t leak, it won’t stain your other belongings, and it’s weightless. It’s the perfect notion for any “sew-cation.”
4. It’s Sustainable & Basically FREE!
How many of us are left with those little soap slivers that are too small to use but we feel guilty throwing away? This hack gives them a second life! You are turning waste into a valuable tool for your craft. It’s a small but satisfying way to make your sewing practice a little more sustainable.
How to Use the Soap Sliver Hack
Ready to try it? It couldn’t be simpler.
- Collect & Dry: Start saving those soap slivers when they get too thin to use comfortably. Place them on a small dish on a windowsill or in a dry spot for a few days until they are completely hard and dry to the touch.
- Find Your Edge: Use the sharpest, thinnest edge of the soap for the most precise line.
- Mark with Gentle Pressure: You don’t need to press hard! A light, consistent pressure is all you need to create a clear mark.
- Always Test a Scrap: As with any marking tool, it’s always a good habit to test it on a small scrap of your fashion fabric first to ensure it gives you the result you want.
