Joann Closing? Say it Ain’t Sew! đ± A Fabric-Lover’s Worst Nightmare!
Hold onto your sewing scissors, folks! The rumor mill is churning, and it ainât pretty. Whispers on the wind (and frantic texts from my sewing circle) suggest that Joann closing could mean the beloved behemoth of bolts and baubles might be facing troubled times. Bankruptcy? Shuttered stores? A world without readily available fusible interfacing?  Cue the dramatic fainting couch swoon.
Okay, okay, I know. They havenât officially closed yet. But the mere possibility is enough to send shivers down the spine of any dedicated sewist. And letâs be real, for those of us in smaller towns, where a trip to Joann is practically a weekend getaway, this news is especially unsettling. Forget your fancy online fabric stores â sometimes a girl just needs to stroke that velvet, squish that minky, and hold that sequined wonder up to the light to see how it shimmers. And weâve mourned the loss of several smaller niche fabric stores closing, like Melanted Fabrics pictured below. And who can forget Hancock Fabrics?!

The Pattern Predicament and the Simplicity Struggle
And what about the patterns? Joann is a treasure trove of tissue-paper dreams, a haven for those of us who still get a thrill from flipping through those pattern catalogs, imagining all the fabulous creations weâll whip up. Simplicity, McCallâs, Vogue â they all have a comfy home on those Joann shelves. But if Joann goes, where will we get our pattern fix? Will we be forced to decipher those dreaded PDF patterns, battling printer jams and wonky scaling?  Shudders

This potential âJoann closingâ situation is a major blow to the Big 5 pattern companies, especially Simplicity Creative Group. They rely on stores like Joann to get their patterns into the hands of eager sewists. Without those tempting pattern displays and impulse buys at the checkout counter, will the next generation of sewists even know the joy of a paper pattern? The thought is simply unbearable!
Quilting in Crisis? (Nah, Quilters are Tough!)
Even the quilting world, with its strong traditions and tight-knit communities, might feel the ripple effects of a âJoann closing.â While quilting has thankfully retained its niche allure and independent spirit, Joann is still a valuable resource for fabric, batting, and all those quirky quilting notions. Imagine a world without readily available rotary cutters and colorful fat quarters!  Gasp!
The Curse of Commercialism and the Rise of the Mega-Clothier
Letâs not forget the bigger picture here, folks. The rise of fast fashion and mass-produced clothing has cast a long shadow over the sewing world. Weâre drowning in a sea of cheap clothes that fall apart after a few washes, fueling a cycle of consumerism and waste. People crave custom clothing, but the clothing industry has become a behemoth, making it harder for small sewing businesses and independent designers to thrive. Even Barbie wears Gap these days, remember when we used to make her clothes with diligence?

Donât Despair, Dear Sewists! Solutions are Stitched This Way!
Okay, enough doom and gloom about the potential of Joann closing! Weâre sewists, for goodness sake! Weâre creative, resourceful, and we can practically sew a button back on with our eyes closed (okay, maybe with a little squinting). Hereâs how we can stitch up some solutions to this potential fabric fiasco:
1. Support Local Fabric Stores (Like, Now!):Â This is more important than ever! Seek out those hidden gems in your community. They might be tucked away in a strip mall or down a quiet side street, but they offer a treasure trove of unique fabrics and personalized service. Plus, youâll be supporting small businesses and keeping those sewing dollars in your local economy. (Think of it as retail therapy with a side of community activism!). Iâve started a city-by-city review called Fabric Wanderlustâ> Here.
2. Embrace the Online Fabric World (Cautiously):Â Yes, online fabric shopping can be a bit of a gamble. But there are some fantastic online retailers out there with vast selections and surprisingly good quality. Just be sure to read reviews, order swatches (always!), and maybe say a little prayer to the sewing gods before hitting that âcheckoutâ button.

3. Pattern Swaps and Secondhand Scores:Â Remember those overflowing pattern stashes our grandmothers used to have? Letâs bring back the tradition of pattern swaps and secondhand shopping! Organize a swap meet with your sewing buddies, scour thrift stores for vintage patterns, or join online groups dedicated to pattern trading. Itâs eco-friendly, budget-friendly, and you might just discover some hidden gems. My pattern stash is ridiculous; see how I organize it on YouTube.
4. Become a Sewing Educator (or Student!):Â Share your sewing skills with the next generation! Offer workshops, mentor a newbie sewist, or volunteer to teach sewing classes at your local community center. And if youâre new to sewing, seek out those experienced sewists who are eager to share their wisdom. Letâs keep those sewing traditions alive! Iâve started teaching sewing right here in the town I live and work in. There are lots of people who are still interested in learning, especially with the threat of Joann closing.

5. Fight Fast Fashion with Slow Sewing:Â Letâs face it, sewing your own clothes takes time and effort. But thatâs what makes it so rewarding! Embrace the slow sewing movement. Choose quality fabrics, savor the process, and create garments that youâll cherish for years to come. Itâs a sustainable, stylish rebellion against the fast fashion frenzy.
6. Stockpile Fabric (Just Kidding⊠Sort of): Okay, maybe donât go full-on doomsday prepper, but having a decent fabric stash canât hurt. Think of it as an investment in your creative future. And who knows, maybe that bolt of sparkly unicorn fabric will be worth a fortune someday! đ
